A Day in the Life of a Baker

I find that often people (including myself) underestimate how much work goes into preparing a cake. It’s much more than just putting the ingredients together and popping it into the oven. Sometimes I find myself still awake during the wee hours of the morning still baking or decorating. There has been countless tears and lots of stress so I thought it would be a good idea to let you guys come into my world and see what it’s like to be a baker/student.

Baking requires more than just one day and so my work often begins on Monday for a Saturday order. (if not earlier)

Monday: I used this day to make sure I had all the ingredients and supplies I’ll need for my order. This includes the basics like flour, sugar and eggs as well as cupcake liners, parchment and cake boxes.
—Friday Update*** Realized I ran out of baking powder and I had to run to the store and get some just to come home and find out I need more lollipop sticks…………. frustrated for sure lol but am I surprised I forgot? no. lol

Tuesday: My order this week is for an 8 inch cake, 2 dozen cupcakes, 2 dozen cake pops and 2 dozen marshmallow pops. So I used this day to bake the cake for the cake pops and get them rolled and into the fridge.

Wednesday: This is the longest day of the week for me because I have class and lab and work. I should of worked on some of my baking but I just end up being so exhausted at the end of the day that I ended up not working on anything. Good decision? We’ll find out on Friday lol.

Thursday: Today I dipped all the cake pops and popped 2 dozen cupcakes to bake in the oven. I also baked the layers to a 8inch cake and whipped up some buttercream to get this cake crumb coated.

Friday: I like to leave the day before the order is due to do the final details so I will be adding a ganache drip to the cake and frosting all 24 cupcakes.

–Update: I frosted and decorated all the cupcakes this morning before work and I’ll finish everything once I come home from work around 8:30PM.

My time management is the worst and it’s hard to break down my days between class and work to give myself enough time to get all my things completed. I’ll probably finish all my baking by 10:30PM tonight (hopefully).

I don’t know if you guys found this interesting but it’s just a little window into what my life is like on a daily basis. Let me know in the comments all the different things you juggle in your day to day lives, I’d love to hear about it!
